Minnesota is inhabited with warm, friendly people. The type that would do anything to help a neighbor in need, even if that meant they had to do without, because they know that if the roles were reversed it would be their neighbor helping them.
And then the influx of Muslims to the Twin Cities occurred. Slowly at first and then a larger migration of Somali refugees in the 1990’s got a foothold. Now, as is typical with a large immigrant population, it draws more immigrants so when they come to the US they can be with their own kind. I'm sure it's just a coincidence Minneapolis-St Paul has gone from one of the most desirable urban areas in which to reside to one of the highest crime rates in the country.
What is unusual is that these immigrant groups do not want to assimilate to the US culture… they are demanding the US adapt to their ways. First, the Muslim taxi drivers refuse to pick up passengers carrying alcohol, as they see it as an affront to Islam. (Consuming alcohol is against Islam, but then again so is being rude and unwelcoming to strangers, as charity and hospitality are tenets of Islam, but they apparently didn’t get to that part of the Koran.) Next came the Target cashiers who refuse to scan pork products because Islam considers pork products to be “unclean”. When Target began reassigning cashiers t other jobs they were threatened with lawsuits protecting the rights of their employees, so now if you’re a customer with pork products you may be asked to scan them yourself.
Then we have the infamous Imams. They were thrown from the US Air flight because they were praying loudly in the pre-boarding area and once on the plane sat separately, continued to roam around the cabin and asked for seatbelt extenders even though none weighed more than 200 pounds and the seat belts fit a 46 or 48 inch waist… you know the story. The Imams, all well respected members of Phoenix’s Muslim community – which has a very large Muslim population –, immediately held a news conference protesting their treatment. Amazingly, CAIR and the local media were on hand instantly. US Airways quickly apologized to the Imams but stood up for the pilot who threw them from the plane because their behavior was suspicious.
The Imams flew home to Phoenix the next day, and several days later flew to Washington DC to hold a protest at the US Airways ticket counter, denouncing the treatment of Muslims by the airline. The fact buried by the left wing media is that US Air no longer had their HQ in Washington DC, in 2005 US Airways merged with America West and moved to the Air West HQ… located in Phoenix. So why would the Imams, all community leaders in Phoenix, fly across the country to have a protest against a company located in their own city?
The media is one reason. The DC media is far more liberal and likely to not scrutinize the actions of the Imams, lest they risk offending them, plus they were virtually guaranteed national coverage. Whereas, the Phoenix media may not spin the story the ways the Imams want it and may not get the national attention.
The second reason is the people. In DC the people are used to such inconveniences and will just take it in stride. In Phoenix the more conservative citizenry might come around to protest their protest, and in Phoenix, unlike Washington DC, they recognize the Second Amendment to the constitution; people not only carry guns, but are encouraged to do so. The citizens and law enforcement in Phoenix, have a pretty libertarian “live and let live as long as you’re not breaking the law” philosophy, but may have objected to the Imams forcing their beliefs on others. Plus if they draw attention to themselves in Phoenix they might replace Mexicans as the people hated most. And the whole angle that the passengers who pointed out the suspicious behavior are being victimized runs counter to the "hang 'em high" vigilante tradition of the old west.
So to wrap things up, they choose Minnesota to be loud and force their beliefs on others by such actions as having the technical school to install a foot washing station so Muslims can hold their ritual washing, they try to force people to not bring alcohol into their cabs, and they refuse to serve customers even though they took jobs in a customer service field, because the people will not object to it, it is not in a Minnesotan's nature to be confrontational. But they fly across the country to hold their protest against US Airways, because aside from the media aspect, the people of Phoenix are not docile and will not be party to the birth of the Islamic States of America.
